Hurricane season is in full swing and Kitterman Woods wants our residents to be prepared. The last ten years have been kind to us, especially compared to the onslaught we faced in 2004 and 2005, but it only takes one storm to remind us of Mother Nature’s fury. If that one storm does affect us, you can be assured that Kitterman Woods is ready and able to respond quickly to the needs of our residents.

Don’t wait until a hurricane is bearing down to make these important decisions. Do it now to ensure your family’s safety. Together we can make it a safer and less worrisome hurricane season for everyone.

Here are some basic tips:

Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the local hurricane evacuation route(s) to take and have a plan for where you can stay. Contact your local emergency management agency for more information.

Put together a disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information if you need to evacuate

If you decide to stay in your home, plan for adequate supplies in case you lose power and water for several days and you are not able to leave due to flooding or blocked roads.

Turn your refrigerator or freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last longer. Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator to be able to check the food temperature when the power is restored.

Turn on your TV/radio, or check your city/county website every 30 minutes in order to get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.

Here is a list of Red Cross recommended supplies:

Recommended Supplies

Water—at least a 3-day supply; one gallon per person per day

Food—at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food

Flashlight & Battery-powered or hand-crank radio Don’t Forget Extra batteries

First aid kit & Medications (7-day supply) and medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, etc.)

Sanitation and personal hygiene items

Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)

Cell phone with chargers

Extra cash

Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers)

Pet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, and bowl)

Extra set of car keys and house keys. Don’t forget to fill your car’s gas tank.

Extra clothing, hat and sturdy shoes, rain gear.

Insect repellent and sunscreen

Today is the Summer Solstice, which is sometimes referred to as “Midsummer” Litha”. It’s the longest day of the year. The amount of daylight only goes down from here….for the next six months. Did you know? The sun does not set at the North Pole today. There is 24 hours of sunlight. Does it make up for that cold day in December when the sun does not rise above the horizon? No, but on this day it sure does feel good wherever you are!

Summer Solstice is the meteorological start of summer. It’s time to enjoy all the great amenities here at Kitterman Woods, two resort style pools, basketball, volleyball, tennis, or a leisurely stroll around the lakeside jogging path.

Kitterman Woods is also minutes from beaches and everything else that goes along with the favorite season of kids and most adults. St. Lucie County has many beautiful beaches for you to visit. Enjoy your own personal water sport interest from snorkeling to boogie boarding. We offer horseback riding on the beach at Frederick Douglas Memorial Park and dogs are welcome at Walton Rocks beach. So come out, have fun and cool down during those summer months. Lifeguards are stationed at Pepper Park and Waveland. Grab your favorite beverage and enjoy the season, because for many of us it is all too short.

We are heart broken by the latest tragedy in Orlando. Here at Kitterman Woods and throughout our state and country, we are reminded that now is the time to unite and give back.

“Hundreds of people have answered the call, waiting in line to give blood to help the victims in the Orlando, Florida, terror attack, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

So many that OneBlood, the local blood bank, met its needs for Sunday, according to Pat Michaels, a spokesman who spoke to CNN affiliate WFTV. But the organization will need blood in the coming days, especially for the rarer types — O negative, O positive and AB plasma, says Michaels.

You can help the victims with monetary donations, as well. Equality Florida, a nonprofit LGBT civil rights organization, has set up a GoFundMe account for the victims and their families. Equality Florida spokesperson Ida Vishkaee Eskamani says all of the money donated will go to the families.

The initial goal was $500,000 which was met in just hours. Now the goal is $5 million.

The money donated will help cover the funeral and medical costs of the victims. The goal is $100,000.
