Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs.

King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, King led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the 1963 nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.  King was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee and, was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

National Bobblehead Day is observed annually on January 7.   This day recognizes a day of celebration for all spring-connected head bobbing figurines.

Bobbleheads have been around for over 100 years and are found in different shapes and sizes. However, none are more popular than those that depict athletes, professional sports teams, mascots, cartoon characters, and celebrities.

On November 18, 2014, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum was announced.  The museum will open in 2016 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and will house the world’s largest collection of bobbleheads, a hall of fame section for the best bobbleheads, as well as many exhibits related to the history and making of bobbleheads, and much more.

New Years resolutions, we all make them. Starts out little like this…  I’m going to eat healthier, lose weight , start working out, save money, reduce stress ect.

By the time March is here we tend to sweep those resolutions under the rug. We’ve all done it and there is NO reason we should feel guilty about not sticking with it.

Here are few simple tips.

One easy way not to feel guilty about that resolution, is by not calling it a resolution. Instead try looking at it as a change in lifestyle. Much like moving to a new home or taking a new job.

Trying to lose weight? Did you know walking 20 minutes a day can help you lose weight? It also is good for your heart and is also good to reduce stress. If you’re not disciplined enough do it on your own, you can hire a personal trainer. He or she is sure to keep you on track. They even have personal trainers that will come to your home with equipment to train you. For as little as $40 a session. Do not put pressure on yourself. If you don’t meet your goal, remember we are human… and your best is always good enough. So go ahead, give yourself a big pat on the back. You aimed to run a mile today but, only made it through a half of mile. Way to go!

Eating healthy, it is something we should all do; however when you worked all day, ran errands after work, then drive by that McDonalds on your way home… It would be so much easier to swing through the drive-through grab a Big Mac, and say dinner served! Well here is a quick and easy way to have a home cooked meal every night. Make your meals in advance. You can find simple healthy recipes online. Some only take 30 minutes to prepare. Then pop them into the freezer. Before you leave for work take the meal out and place in fridge. That way when you get home all you have to do is take it out of the refrigerator and warm it up. Now that is easy and healthy!

Now when it comes to money, there are several different things that you can do to keep more green in your pocket. Some easy changes like getting new car insurance, switching cable service or going with a new cell phone carrier. You would be surprised at the savings per month! Coupons, coupons, coupons… Your not a coupon clipper? You ought to be. Its so easy. With today’s technology you do not even have to buy the Sundays paper to get all the coupons. More and more stores provide electronic coupons. Simply by going to their website or sighing up at their web site. There are other sites like Groupon and Local dines, These site offer you merchandise and restaurant dining for a fraction of the cost.

I have given you a lot of tips today. Are you wondering why I haven’t talked about the reducing stress? Well that is because if you follow these simple tips, you are already on your way to reducing some stress factors in your life.

Each year on the 12th day of December, people across the United States recognize National Poinsettia Day.

History

The poinsettia plant’s connection to the Christmas season dates back to 16th-century Mexico. Legend tells of a girl who worried she had no gift to celebrate Jesus’s birthday because she was too poor.  An angel tells her to give any gift with love. The young girl gathered weeds from alongside the road and placed them in the manger.  Miraculously the weeds bloomed into beautiful red stars.

The poinsettia first came to the United States by way of Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American botanist and the first United States Minister to Mexico. In 1825, he sent cuttings home to Charleston, South Carolina.

It wasn’t until the early 1920s when Paul Ecke, a second-generation farmer in California, discovered a grafting technique which caused the seedlings to branch, that the poinsettia started to take root in American culture. The family hawked their Christmas flower at roadside stands. Paul Ecke Jr. advanced the sales of the poinsettia through shipping and marketing.

The House of Representatives in 2002 created Poinsettia Day to honor the father of the poinsettia industry, Paul Ecke.  The date of December 12 marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, the man responsible for bringing the plan to the United States.

Today marks the 77th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

On December 7th, 1941 hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the naval base at Pearl Harbor . 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and more than 300 airplanes were destroyed. More than 2,000 american soldiers and sailors died and 1,000 were wounded during the attack. Additionally, 68 civilians were also killed and 35 were wounded.  The attack lasted 110 minutes, from 7:55 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. The Japanese lost 65 men, with an additional soldier being captured.

On December 8th, President Roosevelt declared that December 7th, 1941 would be “a date that will live in infamy”.  President Roosevelt said, “No matter now long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” That day, December 8th, 1941 The United States declared war on Japan.
