]]> Kitterman Woods Residents come out and support your local Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society will having a trip down memory lane. Members and supporters of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society have had a blast setting the time machine backwards and hosting mini class reunions this summer! In July it was a return to the psychedelic 60s with everything from The Stroll to a mini-Beatles invasion. In August, we rewound to the 1970s and learned that nearly everyone knows at least a few of the words to the decade icon I Will Survive, so let’s see how well we do when we crank the time machine back to the 1980s.  On Tuesday, September 25th, the Sunrise Black Box Theatre will come alive with the likes of Michael Jackson telling everyone that Billy Jean is not my lover. You can travel back with Bonnie Tyler for a Total Eclipse of the Heart, and if you bring a group of friends, you may just find out if it’s true that Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Along the way, there will be trivia contests, prizes for the best flashback to 1980s fashion (think lots of hair spray and fingerless lace gloves), and a chance to travel back to a time before everyone had a cell phone, laptop computers weren’t even a twinkle in Steve Jobs eyes, and the sound of the AOL logon was brand new and kind of intriguing.
Sure, well still have the classic jazz jam you love for the first hour of the evening as we always do, but on Tuesday, September 25th, we’ll all become Men Without Hats because, we can dance if we want to. We can leave your friends behind. Cause your friends don’t dance, and if they don’t dance, well, they’re no friends of mine.
Even though these are extra special evenings of music, memories, and magic, the cover charge is still only $6 for members and $7 for everyone else. Best of all, your admission price helps cover the costs of scholarships for young, talented musicians hoping to pursue a career in music, like the eight scholarships we gave out just a couple months ago to area students.

The National Toasted Marshmallow Day is celebrated on August 30. Toasted marshmallows are a popular backyard and camping tradition in English-speaking countries. To make a toasted marshmallow, one needs to place a marshmallow on the end of a skewer or stick and hold it carefully over the fire.Some people prefer their marshmallows gently toasted and some like a charred outer layer which is achieved by igniting marshmallows. Some people eat toasted marshmallows whole and some eat the outer layer and toast the rest of the marshmallow again.Toasted marshmallows are also often used for making s’mores.

A s’more is a campfire treat that consists of a slab of chocolate and a toasted marshmallow sandwiched between two graham crackers.

Here are today’s five thing to know about Marshmallow:

  1. This confection is the modern version of a medicinal confection made from Althaea officinalis, the marshmallow plant.
  2. Not all marshmallows are vegan, most marshmallows contain eggs or animal based gelatin.
  3. The marshmallow is a confection that, in its modern form, typically consists of sugar, corn syrup, water, gelatin that has been softened in hot water, dextrose, vanilla flavorings, and sometimes coloring, whipped to a spongy consistency.
  4. The marshmallow probably first came into being as a medicinal substance, since the mucilaginous extracts comes from the root of the marshmallow plant, Althaea officinalis, which were used as a remedy for sore throats.
  5. Concoctions of other parts of the marshmallow plant had medical uses as well.

To celebrate the National Toasted Marshmallow Day, make a campfire and indulge yourself with this sweet treat.
