NATIONAL GAZPACHO DAY

National Gazpacho Day is celebrated across the United States each year on December 6. Gazpacho is typically a tomato-based vegetable soup which is served cold. Originating in the southern Spanish region of Andalucia, Gazpacho is widely consumed in Spanish cuisine, usually during the summer months.

The original Spanish recipe includes stale bread, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, onion and garlic, olive oil, wine, vinegar, water and salt.

Following is the typical method of preparing gazpacho:

Washing vegetables

Peeling tomatoes, garlic and onions.

Chop all vegetables (traditionally pounded with mortar) and process in food processor.

Add soaked bread.

Blend part of the processed contents until liquid, depending on desired consistency.

Add chilled water, olive oil, vinegar and salt to taste.

Add remaining processed ingredients.

Add garnishes as desired.

In Andalucía, most gazpacho recipes typically include stale bread, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, onion and garlic, olive oil, wine vinegar, water, and salt.

Gazpacho has many modern variations including that of avocados, cucumber, parsley, watermelon, grapes, meat stock, seafood and a few other ingredients.

Gazpacho is sometimes served with ice cubes when it has not had enough time to chill before serving.

Walk Safely

Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.

Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.

Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.

Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to
the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.

Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Trick or Treat With an Adult

Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe

Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.

Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Drive Extra Safely on Halloween

Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.

Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.

Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

The National Toasted Marshmallow Day is celebrated on August 30. Toasted marshmallows are a popular backyard and camping tradition in English-speaking countries. To make a toasted marshmallow, one needs to place a marshmallow on the end of a skewer or stick and hold it carefully over the fire. Some people prefer their marshmallows gently toasted and some like a charred outer layer which is achieved by igniting marshmallows. Some people eat toasted marshmallows whole and some eat the outer layer and toast the rest of the marshmallow again.Toasted marshmallows are also often used for making s’mores.

A s’more is a campfire treat that consists of a slab of chocolate and a toasted marshmallow sandwiched between two graham crackers.

Here are today’s five thing to know about Marshmallow:

This confection is the modern version of a medicinal confection made from Althaea officinalis, the marshmallow plant.

Not all marshmallows are vegan, most marshmallows contain eggs or animal based gelatin.

The marshmallow is a confection that, in its modern form, typically consists of sugar, corn syrup, water, gelatin that has been softened in hot water, dextrose, vanilla flavorings, and sometimes coloring, whipped to a spongy consistency.

The marshmallow probably first came into being as a medicinal substance, since the mucilaginous extracts comes from the root of the marshmallow plant, Althaea officinalis, which were used as a remedy for sore throats.

Concoctions of other parts of the marshmallow plant had medical uses as well.

To celebrate the National Toasted Marshmallow Day, make a campfire and indulge yourself with this sweet treat.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council has designated July as Hot Dog Month and for 2018 Wednesday, July 18 as National Hot Dog Day.

Over 25 million hot dogs are sold at baseball stadiums each year.

Whether they are grilled, boiled, broiled, pan-fried, rotisserie cooked, cooked on a stick over a campfire or any other way, hot dogs are a favorite summertime staple. They are loved by children and adults alike plain or garnished with one or a combination of mustard, ketchup, onions, mayonnaise, relish, cheese, bacon, chili, or sauerkraut.

On May 31, 2012, a world record was set for the most expensive hot dog. The “California Capitol City Dawg” sold for $145.49 at Capitol Dawg in Sacramento, California. The “California Capitol City Dawg” features:

A grilled 18″ all-beef, in natural casing frank from Chicago

served on a fresh-baked herb and oil focaccia roll spread with white truffle butter, then grilled

topped with whole grain mustard from France, garlic and herb mayonnaise

sauteed chopped shallots, organic mixed baby greens, maple syrup

marinated/fruitwood smoked uncured bacon from New Hampshire

chopped tomatoes, sweetened dried cranberries, chopped tomato

expensive moose cheese from Sweden

basil olive oil/pear-cranberry-coconut balsamic vinaigrette and ground peppercorn

Proceeds from the sale of each 3 lb. super dog were donated to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

7-Eleven sells the most grilled hot dogs in North America – 100 million annually.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Have a hot dog and post on social media using #NationalHotDogDay to encourage others to join in.

HISTORY

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council created National Hot Dog Day. The first National Hot Dog Day was established in 1991 to coincide with a hot dog lunch on Capitol Hill every year on the 3rd Wednesday in July.
