Kitterman Woods Residents Florida Arts & Dance Company (FADC) students are filled with the spirit of the season as they prepare to present the holiday classic, “The Nutcracker” at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart. For months, students have been working with instructors to perfect choreography for the show which brings the audience on a magical journey filled with sweet treats and waltzing snowflakes.

FADC students are joined by guest artists from Russian Ballet Orlando to perform “The Nutcracker” on Friday, December 14 at 7:00 pm and Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm at the Lyric Theatre in downtown Stuart. On Sunday, December 16 at 3:00 pm, FADC students perform “The Gentle Nutcracker” a shortened version of the show with subdued lights and sound for those who are sensory sensitive or those with young children.

Kitterman Woods Residents come enjoy the Holiday Lights!!  Main Street Fort Pierce has a day full of family-friendly activities planned for Dec. 2, starting at 1 p.m. Enjoy entertainment by local dance groups, food vendors, arts and crafts, a kids’ zone and the much anticipated parade at 4 p.m. Immediately following the parade is the Holiday Christmas Tree lighting. The popular “Holiday Lights Spectacular” in Marina Square which consists of over 100,000 lights synchronized to holiday music is a must-see for local and out of town guests.

Traditionally celebrated on February 22—Washington’s actual day of birth—the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs.

King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, King led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the 1963 nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.  King was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee and, was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
