January is National Blood Donor Month. Winter is one of the most difficult times of year to collect enough blood products to meet patient needs. During the winter months, inclement weather often results in cancelled blood drives, and seasonal illnesses like the flu may cause some donors to become temporarily unable to donate.

When you donate blood or platelets you may be helping a cancer patient, or someone battling a life threatening illness or injury. Approximately 1 out of every 7 people entering the hospital needs blood, 1 donation has the potential to save as many as 3 lives and only, 3 teaspoons of blood can save a baby’s life.

Today is the 1^st day of fall also known as the autumn equinox. It is the point where there is exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness at the equator.

The Equinoxes, both those in Spring and in Fall, not only shepherd in a brand new season, but also mark the two days a year when the day and night are equal.

In many regions of North America, the landscape silently explodes with vibrant colors of red, yellow, and orange. Here is beautiful south Florida the change is more subtle but still there. Be sure to take a leisurely walk around the property to see what signs of autumn you can see.

For many autumn is the best season of the year. Since the end of the summer is kind of a bummer (rhymes!), it only makes sense that the season that follows summer would be awesome.

If you’re sitting around bummed that the summer is almost over, chin up. You may not be able to think clearly about fall at the moment because you’re sulking about summer’s end, so here are some things to look forward to for autumn.

Are you ready for a fun day of some great bargain shopping?  Then today is the day because each year on August 17th, National Thrift Shop Day is observed across the United States.

A thrift shop (also known as a thrift store, charity shop, hospice shop or resale shop) is a retail establishment typically run by a charitable organization to raise money to be used in accord with the organization’s stated charitable purpose.

Thrift shops are a type of social enterprise that typically sell used goods that are donated by members of the public and are often staffed by volunteers.  Donation of the items being sold allows for a lower cost to the buyers.

Saving money is on the minds of everyone these days and shopping at thrift stores is becoming more and more popular.  Clothing, furniture and household goods are great finds among the other hidden treasures within the walls of thrift shops across the country.  To some, shopping at a thrift store isn’t even about the price (that’s just a bonus!) but instead, it’s about the adventure of finding vintage and antique items.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council has designated July as Hot Dog Month and for 2018 Wednesday, July 18 as National Hot Dog Day.

Over 25 million hot dogs are sold at baseball stadiums each year.

Whether they are grilled, boiled, broiled, pan-fried, rotisserie cooked, cooked on a stick over a campfire or any other way, hot dogs are a favorite summertime staple.  They are loved by children and adults alike plain or garnished with one or a combination of mustard, ketchup, onions, mayonnaise, relish, cheese, bacon, chili, or sauerkraut.

On May 31, 2012, a world record was set for the most expensive hot dog. The “California Capitol City Dawg” sold for $145.49 at Capitol Dawg in Sacramento, California.  The “California Capitol City Dawg” features:

• A grilled 18″ all-beef, in natural casing frank from Chicago
• served on a fresh-baked herb and oil focaccia roll spread with white truffle butter, then grilled
• topped with whole grain mustard from France, garlic and herb mayonnaise
• sauteed chopped shallots, organic mixed baby greens, maple syrup
• marinated/fruitwood smoked uncured bacon from New Hampshire
• chopped tomatoes, sweetened dried cranberries, chopped tomato
• expensive moose cheese from Sweden
• basil olive oil/pear-cranberry-coconut balsamic vinaigrette and ground peppercorn
• Proceeds from the sale of each 3 lb. super dog were donated to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

HISTORY

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council created National Hot Dog Day.  The first National Hot Dog Day was established in 1991 to coincide with a hot dog lunch on Capitol Hill every year on the 3rd Wednesday in July.

National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day is observed annually on March 29th. This day honors all small business owners.

Small businesses are a vital part of the United States economy.  These businesses are not always appreciated for the critical role that they play.  We can show them their much-deserved appreciation on National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day.

Owning your own business is a goal that many people strive to attain.  It takes long hours, hard work and much dedication.  Countless hours of nurturing the business are needed in the process of growing the business.  From starting out to building and expanding, a successful small business is the goal of every owner.

Some of these Mom and Pop shops are handed down from one generation to the next while others are new start-ups.   “Mom and Pop” businesses offer superior customer service as the owners take personal pride in their operations as well as pride in their communities.

Rick and Margie Segel founded National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day in honor of couples like his parents whose successful hat shop opened in 1939 and grew into a 10,000 square feet and $2 million dollar clothing store.
