October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month which is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not.

What is cybersecurity awareness? It’s not just knowledge. Knowing isn’t doing. Security awareness is knowledge combined with attitudes and behaviors that serve to protect our information assets. Being cybersecurity aware means, you understand what the threats are, and you take the right steps to prevent them.

Probably one of the most important steps to online safety is good password practices. Passwords are a part of our everyday lives and are the main form of online account security. Here are some simple tips to make a secure password.

• Make your password several words. Use at least 12 characters and make sure that you will remember the password. Writing the password on a piece of paper under your keyboard is NOT secure.

• For every account, create a different password. Even if a criminal can crack one of your passwords, they should not be able to get into all your accounts.

• Use a reputable password manager. Password managers can randomly generate unique passwords for every account and store them securely for you.

Here are some quick fall cleaning tips for our residents at Kitterman Woods.

Tip 1: Two areas need special attention before the start of the holiday cooking and baking marathon: The outside of the cabinets and the inside of the fridge. Using paper towels or a clean dishcloth, rub wood cabinets with oil soap, and wipe knobs and pulls with straight vinegar. Completely empty the fridge and do a thorough cleaning with soapy dishwater or all-purpose spray cleaner. Take out the bins and wash in the sink with soapy water … but watch the temperature. Hot water can crack the plastic. Dry and line them with a paper towel before putting them back in.

Tip 2: Drag a step stool over to the fridge.  Armed yourself with all-purpose cleaner and paper towels, scrub the top to get rid of built-up grime. Go through your pantry and gather up all the unopened food you know you won’t use to give to your local food pantry. (Anything you donate before the end of the year is a tax write-off.) While you’re at it, toss out any spices that have overstayed their welcome; check online for how long specific spices keep their potency.

Tip 3: It’s time to face whatever’s lurking behind all your heavy furniture. Move everything away from the wall and wash the baseboards with oil soap. (The room will smell great!) Use a magic sponge to remove scuff marks from the walls. Vacuum behind the curtains and between the cushions.

Tip 4: Change out summer bedding and curtains for colder-weather ones. Wash everything before you store it for the season; dirty clothes can attract insects. Bring out your fall and winter clothes, but before you put away your summer stuff, go through it carefully. Store only the things you loved wearing this past season, and donate the rest. And if you haven’t done it in the past year, clean the carpet — including inside the closets.

Tip 5: Last but not least: Take down your lighting fixtures and ceiling fans, and see what’s been living inside them all summer. Bugs and spiders love it up there (guaranteed you’ll find a web or two), so give your fixtures a good wiping and cleaning.

What is LGBT or Gay Pride?

It is a movement that celebrates sexual diversity. For lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people it is a way of protesting about discrimination and violence. It promotes their dignity, equal rights, self-affirmation and is a way of increasing society’s awareness of the issues they face.

An Annual LGBT Pride Celebration

Every year, during the month of June, the LGBT community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognizing the influence LGBT people have had around the world. Why was June chosen? Because it is when the Stonewall Riots took place, way back in 1969.

What were the Stonewall Riots?

The riots were prompted by a raid that took place during the early morning, at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. The LGBT community held a series of spontaneous, often violent demonstrations to protest against the raid and calling for the establishment of places that gays and lesbians could go and be open about their sexual orientation. In such places there should be no fears of being arrested. The riots served as a catalyst for the rights of LGBT people, and within 6 months, 2 gay activist groups had formed in New York. Over the years since the event, many gay rights organisations have been formed. Not just in the US but around the world.

Who Started the June Celebration?

Known as the “Mother of Pride”, it was Brenda Howard who coordinated the first LGBT Pride march. As well as sparking the idea for a week of events around Pride Day. These events then developed into the annual LGBT celebrations held every June.

Walking the Dog Day is a special day that your dog looks forward to all year long. But, wait a minute Don’t you walk your dog just about every day? Sure, you do! And, weather permitting, its enjoyable for you and your dog.

Kitterman Woods has a beautiful lakeside walking path for all our resident to enjoy and watch next month for upgrades to our dog park and playground area.

On this day walking with your dog is a must. If you don’t have a dog, perhaps you can join a friend while he or she walks their dog. Be sure to stop by the office for some yummy dog treats or a refill on your doggy bags.

This year the solstice occurs on Thursday December 21^st and marks the beginning of winter and is the shortest day of the year. For thousands of years, Winter Solstice has celebrated the new solar year. It celebrates the return of the sun, as every day now will see more sun, which is at its southernmost point, and now begins its long, six month journey north.

Winter Solstice is also been known as Christmas, Yule, and Saturnalia. It been celebrated by pagans for thousands of years, and many of the traditions now associated with Christmas had their roots in winter solstice celebrations – including Yule logs, mistletoe and Christmas trees. The Druids – the priests of the ancient Celts – used evergreen trees, holly and mistletoe as symbols of everlasting life during winter solstice rituals.

This year, let your winter solstice celebration be an occasion to look deeply at small things, to feel at home in the world and to be just where you belong. Take a walk around the lake or just look outside to admire the beauty of nature and remember no snow for us.
